Your home's source for the unique and beautiful.
As many of you can probably relate, after the vibrant festive decorations of the holiday decorations are packed away, the long, dark winter nights seem heavy. Almost as if the cold and gloom of the season seeps deep into the soul, leaving behind a sense of longing for the color and sunshine of spring.
In our home, we keep the festive decorations up through mid-January. It’s our time to slow down and enjoy the beauty. Even then, there’s a slight sense of let-down as the tree comes down, and everything gets packed away for the year.
To combat the winter blues, we focus on three things: brightening up the darkness, creating a feeling of warmth and comfort, and bringing the outdoor feel inside the home.
Lighting is so important this time of year. The short days and long, dreary nights can often affect our moods, making it feel as though the winter darkness has taken over. One way we lift our spirits is by keeping our outdoor icicle lights up throughout winter. We find it helps brighten our outdoor spaces and bring a welcoming feel as we return home.
The same principle can be applied to the interior of your home. Adding soft, ambient lighting throughout your home decor will create an inviting glow and warmth that lifts your mood that is so needed during the winter months.
Consider using floor lamps and small table lamps in neutral colors and made from natural elements. Place them near your favorite chair or couch to cast a cozy, soft light in those dark corners.
Candles are another simple and effective way to brighten up your spaces. The soft, flickering glow of candles creates a warm welcoming atmosphere, making every room feel more inviting. You can also incorporate string lights, like twinkling fairy lights, into your existing decor. Drape them over faux greenery on mantels or shelves to add subtle ambiance.
There is nothing better than curling up in a warm, cozy spot on a cold winter’s night. Encompass yourself with the homey, comfortable warmth and softness that brings about joy and contentment.
Chunky knit throws and pillows are an excellent way to add texture and dimension, while also creating a fuller, more inviting look. Don’t be afraid to layer plenty of pillows and throws, turning any space into a nest of comfort.
For a homespun touch, incorporate neutral textiles like soft plaids or muted tones to bring warmth and charm into the room. These simple details can transform your space into a sanctuary from the cold.
Winter is the perfect time to simplify your décor and embrace the beauty of nature. Bring the outdoors inside by adding small, tasteful arrangements of greenery and natural elements.
A vase filled with faux evergreen branches or berries can instantly brighten your dining table without overwhelming it. Consider using sprigs of greenery in smaller vases placed throughout your home for a natural, uncluttered feel.
Create mantle decor of simple garlands or greenery paired with soft candlelight for a serene, seasonal look.
Add seasonal stems of evergreens and berries to arrangements. Florals such as paper whites or magnolia blooms will create a fresh, clean feel and forecast the spring that is to come.
Rustic elements, such as pine cones, moss, or vine balls, are perfect for creating a cozy, woodsy decor. Fill a dough bowl with these natural items, surrounding a decorative deer or battery operated candle. Add fairy lights to create a warm glow. For a final touch, add faux antlers as accents.
By adding light, warmth, and natural elements to your home, you can easily fight off the winter blues. Simple adjustments to your decor not only brighten up your space, but also create an atmosphere of a warm embrace. The combination of soft lighting, cozy materials, and touches of nature will carry you through the winter months, until the arrival of spring’s first blooms.
